EPISODE #3 – Mari, Creator of THE GENTLE TAROT
//
Conversations for the Mystically Curious is a podcast brought to you by hosts Joie and Kate of Kismet Berlin. They interview creators, makers and inspiring people working in the realms of esoteric spirituality, science and the arts.
THE GENTLE TAROT IS INSPIRED BY NATURE
Mariza Ryce Aparicio-Tovar, otherwise known as Mari in the Sky, was working in some of the most remote areas of Alaska when she began illustrating flora and fauna. Drawing became an important creative outlet to counterbalance the biology work she was doing for The Department of Fish and Game. As her drawing practice evolved, she discovered that it was an effective way to nurture her mental health while combating depression and anxiety.
MARI IN THE SKY IS A SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST
Mari is a self-taught artist who has been drawing since she was a child. In 2019, she began selling stickers to a local museum in Alaska. A supportive museum employee advised her, “you need to sell more… you can eventually quit your job and do art full-time if you keep at it!” Although it seemed like a fantasy to her at the time, Mari took the advice.
HONORING THE EARTH IS CENTRAL TO THE GENTLE TAROT
In our interview, Mari explains that she felt like The Gentle Tarot almost created itself. Visual images and writing for each card emerged through her creative process. Mari’s indigenous American ancestral beliefs about humanity’s direct connection to the planet are central themes of her art.
